Options for Chairman Scudder to Fix the Lack of Black & AANHPI Representation at the Texas Democratic Convention

Citing a Need for Unity of the Democratic Ticket for November’s Nominees, Texas Democratic Party Chair Candidate Marco Orrantia is Concerned About the Lack of a Rainbow Coalition

Austin — TDP Chair Candidate Marco Orrantia officially provides options to the Chairman of the Texas Democratic Party and Permanent Chair of the Texas Democratic Convention to ameliorate the lack of Black and AANHPI representation of speakers at the Texas Democratic Convention. “It’s disappointing the lack of vision and political thought put into the speakers' lineup at the Texas Democratic Convention,” Orrantia said.

“In a year that we are at the precipice of flipping one or more statewide races for the first time in more than three decades, it’s malfeasance that Chairman Scudder is using the power of his incumbency to help rig his reelection at the state convention,” Orrantia continued, “but is not wielding his power to work with our nominees at the top of the ticket to ensure that we consolidate, solidify, and motivate our AANHPI & Black partners through representation of announce speakers at the convention June 25-27 in Corpus Christi.”

Here are some suggestions for Chairman Scudder to have Black and AANHPI representation on the Texas Democratic Convention speaker list:

• Panel with current and former Black and AANHPI Democratic Judges

• A Tribute to Congressman Al Green by Congressman Christian Menefee, after they were paired by the Texas GOP into the same congressional district

• Since our Convention Co-Chairs are a former County Judge and an outgoing County Judge, make the next County Judge of Harris County, the Honorable Letitia Plummer, a former Houston City Council member, Black Woman, and Muslim, a Convention co-Chair

• Have Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett introduce State Rep. James Talarico as our nominee for U.S. Senate

• Have State Rep. Nominee Pooja Sethi introduce Lt. Governor Nominee, State Rep. Vikki Goodwin

• Make the Chair of the House Democratic Caucus Gene Wu, a Convention Co-Chair
